Irish farmers are currently facing an unprecedented administrative burden that threatens to overwhelm family farm businesses. The sheer volume of scheme deadlines, record-keeping demands, and ever-tightening regulatory windows has turned daily farm management into a relentless compliance exercise. Farmers are expected to spend as much time behind a desk or managing digital portals as they do tending to their livestock and land. Missing a single deadline or making a minor error risks severe financial penalties and scheme disqualifications, adding intense pressure to farm households across the country. To help navigate the upcoming months, Beef Plan Movement outlines some of the critical deadlines and essential actions required:
Chemical Fertiliser Application Deadline (14 September): This is the final date to spread chemical nitrogen and phosphorus. The closed season officially begins on 15 September.
Slurry Spreading Deadline (30 September): The final day for applying organic slurry and other liquid fertilisers. The strict closed period begins on 1 October. Note that from 16 to 30 September, watercourse buffer zones increase from 5 metres to 10 metres.
National Fertiliser Database Closing Stock Declaration (15 October): Farmers must declare all closing stocks of chemical fertilisers held on their holding as of 11:59 PM on 14 September. A declaration must be submitted via MyAgFood even if you have zero stock remaining.
Farmyard Manure (FYM) Spreading Deadline (31 October): The last day to safely apply farmyard manure before the winter closed period commences on 1 November.
Soiled Water Spreading Deadline (30 November): For farms producing soiled water, the prohibited spreading period begins on 1 December and runs until 31 December.
Beef Welfare Scheme (BWS) Application Deadline (23 September): Applications for the 2026 Beef Welfare Scheme close at 5:00 PM. To secure the essential funding (up to €50 per calf between meal feeding and optional vaccination), farmers must submit online through MyAgFood
ACRES Annual LESS & Rare Breeds Declarations (31 October): For those participating in the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES), annual declarations—such as the Low Emission Slurry Spreading (LESS) return or Rare Breeds data—must be finalized on the portal.
Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme (SCEP) Weighing Submission (1 November): Eligible cow-calf pairs must be weighed on the same day prior to weaning. All data must be successfully logged into the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) database by 5:30 PM.
SCEP Genotyping Target (30 November): Participating herds must return genotype tissue samples covering at least 70% of their yearly reference number to the designated laboratory.
Hedge Cutting Season Opens (1 September): The annual closed season under the Wildlife Act has concluded. Hedgerow cutting and maintenance are permitted from 1 September until 28 February.
Income Tax Return Submission (31 October): The standard statutory deadline for self-assessed income tax returns and preliminary tax payments. This is extended to mid-November for farmers filing electronically via the Revenue Online Service (ROS).
